Social media, on purpose.

Intentional use isn't a mindset trick. It's a setup — open with a task, leave when it's done.

Updated July 2026

The short answer

Intentional social media use means every session starts with a task — reply to a friend, post the photo, find that tutorial — and ends when the task does. The reliable way to get there isn't resolve, it's setup: use Sociano to open platforms without their feed surfaces, so the task is the only thing on screen.

What changes — and what stays

Removed

  • Feeds that hijack the task you opened with
  • Suggested content between you and the thing you came for
  • Autoplay chains
  • The “while I'm here” detour

Kept

  • DMs and replies
  • Posting
  • Search
  • Deliberate visits to accounts and communities

How it works

  1. 1

    Download Sociano

Get Sociano on the App Store. It's free to download on iPhone, and setup takes about a minute.

  2. 2

    Open your platforms inside Sociano

Sign in through the official logins. Each platform opens onto the useful parts — DMs, search, posting — instead of a feed, so your task stays the only thing on screen.

  3. 3

    Add native-app blocking (optional)

If muscle memory keeps opening the native apps directly, enable Sociano's native app blocking. It uses Apple's Screen Time framework, so the calm route becomes the default one.

Why setup beats intention

Nobody opens Instagram intending to disappear into it. Sessions start with a purpose, and the interface's job is to dissolve it: a feed before your task, a recommendation after it, autoplay instead of an ending.

Intentions are no match for that on a tired evening — but environments are. When the platform opens onto your task instead of a feed, intentional use stops being a discipline practice and becomes the path of least resistance.

Good to know

Sociano can't supply the intention. If you open Instagram with nothing in mind, you'll find your DMs and a search bar and not much else — many people find that's exactly the moment they put the phone down.

Sociano works through controlled web sessions and never modifies other apps; some native-only features are limited. Details on the limitations page.

Frequently asked

What does intentional use actually look like?
Open with a named task — reply to Anna, post the photo, find the recipe. Do it. Leave. The test isn't how long you spent; it's whether you did the thing you came for and nothing decided your next move for you.
Do I have to stop watching videos for fun?
No. Intentionality is about who decides. Choosing to watch something you searched for is intentional; landing in a feed that picked for you is not. Sociano removes the surfaces that decide for you.
How is this different from digital minimalism?
Same spirit, less renunciation. Digital minimalism often prescribes quitting; intentional use keeps what serves you and removes the machinery that doesn't. Sociano is tooling for the second option.
What if my job requires social media?
Then feeds are an occupational hazard, and surface removal matters more, not less. Keep posting, replying and search — remove the parts optimized to make your workday disappear.
