The Clearspace alternative that skips the push-ups.
Ten squats buy you entry to the same feed you were avoiding. Sociano makes the feed itself go away.
The short answer
Clearspace guards the door to your apps with a physical toll — a breathing exercise, squats or push-ups, verified before the app opens. As friction goes, it's the cleverest version on iPhone, and we mean that sincerely. But the Instagram on the other side of the workout is exactly the Instagram the workout was protecting you from, and full access is listed around $49.99 a year, billed annually. Sociano works on the room rather than the door: it opens platforms in controlled sessions with Reels, Shorts, Explore and For You removed, while DMs, search and posting stay. It's available by annual subscription at $39.99/year in the U.S.; local App Store pricing varies.
What Clearspace gets right
Clearspace, a Y Combinator startup, noticed something most screen-time tools miss: a tap costs nothing, but a push-up costs something real. Before a guarded app opens, you complete a centering exercise the app actually verifies, pick a session length, and Clearspace pulls you back out when time runs down.
The effort gate can interrupt an impulse open, but it still delivers you into the same feed after the exercise. Sociano removes the surfaces that extend the session, so it addresses the larger problem instead of making entry more laborious.
The workout ends. The feed doesn't.
Here is the structural catch: Clearspace changes the moment of entry and nothing after it. Once the squats are done and your session timer is running, you're inside the same Instagram everyone else has — Reels one tab away, Explore under the search bar, suggested posts woven between the people you follow. The session length you chose was a promise made by the calm version of you. The platform spends the entire session negotiating with the other one.
Every friction tool shares this ceiling, whether the toll is a breath or a burpee — the gentler versions have the same shape, as we cover in our look at one sec. Effort raises the price of entering. It does nothing about what the app is engineered to do once you've paid. And like app limits that stop working, tolls tend to fade into ritual: after a few weeks the exercise is simply part of how you open Instagram, the way a smoker's walk outside becomes part of the cigarette.
Then there's the bill. Clearspace's free tier covers a single app; as of mid-2026, full access is listed around $49.99 a year, with no monthly tier to test the water. That's a real commitment for a doorman — while the room behind the door stays exactly as the platform designed it.
Sociano spends its effort on the room instead. Platforms open inside controlled in-app sessions — you sign in through each platform's official web login, so Sociano never sees your password — and per-platform rules strip out the addictive surfaces: Reels, Shorts, Explore, For You feeds, suggested posts, autoplay chains. Entry costs nothing, because what's inside no longer needs guarding.

Close the side door if you need to
If your thumb still reaches for the native apps, Sociano's optional blocking — built on Apple's Screen Time framework — makes the calm session the path of least resistance.
When to stay with Clearspace
If impulse opens are your whole problem, and especially if they spread beyond social media — games, news, shopping apps — Clearspace's gate works on anything, including TikTok, which Sociano doesn't cover. A verified push-up in front of every doorway on your phone is a legitimate strategy, and Sociano makes no claim to replace it.
The two also stack neatly: a gate at the entrance, a feedless room inside. One honest caveat before you decide — Sociano's sessions are web-based, so a few native-only features are limited. The complete list lives on our limitations page, and the reasoning behind surface removal is laid out in our comparison with Screen Time and timer blockers.
