A one sec alternative that changes the app, not the door.
The breathing pause builds awareness. But behind the pause, the feed is exactly as it was. Sociano works on the feed.
The short answer
one sec puts a breathing pause between you and a distracting app, then asks whether you still want in. But the app on the other side is unchanged, and for many people the dismissing tap eventually becomes automatic. Sociano intervenes where the time is actually lost: inside the session, with Reels, Shorts, For You feeds and suggested content removed while DMs, search and posting keep working. The pause asks a question. Sociano changes the answer.
What one sec gets right
one sec is built on the observation that most feed-opening is unconscious. A forced breath can make the gesture visible, but awareness alone does not change the feed waiting on the other side. Sociano removes that feed and requires an annual subscription at $39.99/year in the U.S.; local App Store pricing varies. one sec is listed at around $4.99 a month for its repeated-pause approach.
If you're early in noticing the habit, that gentleness is a good place to start. Nothing here disputes it.
When the pause becomes a tap
The trouble is what awareness is up against. Once you breathe through the pause and confirm, you land in the same Instagram, the same YouTube — feeds intact, autoplay intact, recommendations tuned by systems that have been studying you for years. The intervention lasts a few seconds; the environment it delivers you into is engineered to last an hour.
And interventions repeated daily get absorbed. The same automation that made you open the app without thinking learns to clear the pause without thinking. It's the interruption version of the problem we describe in why app limits don't work: any gate you pass through often enough stops being a gate and becomes part of the corridor. That isn't a personal failing — it's what habituation does to any repeated stimulus. The design is the problem, not the person breathing through it.
Working on the session instead
Sociano's premise is that the decisive moment isn't the doorway — it's what the room contains. So instead of guarding the entrance, it changes the room.

Make the calm route the default
If the native apps keep pulling you back, Sociano's optional blocking uses Apple's Screen Time framework to close that path — no jailbreak, no hacks, and Sociano never modifies other apps.

Where each tool fits
If the pause still stops you — if you regularly breathe, reconsider and put the phone down — one sec is doing its job and you don't need to change anything. Friction works for some people indefinitely, and that's a fine outcome.
Sociano fits when the pause has gone quiet: when you notice yourself clearing it on autopilot, or when the real losses happen after entry, twenty minutes into a doomscroll you never decided to start. It also fits if you'd rather not be asked a question every time you legitimately need to answer a message. One honest note: Sociano's sessions are web-based, so a few native-only features are limited — the specifics are on our limitations page, and the broader philosophy is in using social media intentionally.
